Helen K. Jones Woman of Strength Award
Helen Jones, 1954-2008
The Helen K. Jones Woman of Strength Award was created in 2009 to honor the life of Helen Jones, former president of Recovery Resources. Helen lived her life as a woman of strength. She believed that the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure she carries or the way she combs her hair, but in the beliefs she carries, the issues she advocates for and the injustices she fights against. The Woman of Strength Award is presented every May at Recovery Resources’ Annual Meeting.

Martha Baker, 2010 Recipient

The 2010 recipient of the Helen K. Jones Woman of Strength Award is Mrs. Martha (“Marty”) Baker. Baker's incredible journey began decades ago, when she decided to seek treatment for her own alcoholism. After embracing sobriety, she worked diligently to create systems that enabled others struggling with this disease to get the help that they needed. In the early 1970’s, Baker was one of the founding trustees of the local chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism. In the late 70’s, she became president and chairwoman of Alcoholism Services of Cleveland and also joined the Board of the National Council on Alcoholism. By the mid-1980’s, the National Council asked Baker to be their first woman president. Her impact there continues to reverberate in major ways. Baker has remained a steadfast and loyal supporter of Recovery Resources since her involvement began with the former Alcoholism Services of Cleveland nearly 40 years ago.
